About Piezo Buzzers & Audio Indicators

Piezo buzzers and audio indicators are devices that create an audible sound when activated. They are used to alert someone to a variety of situations. They are actived by an electric signal, either from an integrated circuit or applied voltage. Piezo buzzers consist of two components: the piezo buzzer element and the oscillator circuit. The piezo element converts electric energy into a mechanical – sound vibration – that is audible when it passes through the air. The oscillator circuit controls the frequency of the sound and the intensity of the sound. Audio indicators, such as LEDs or LCD displays, can also be used to produce audible tones. They consist of a light emitting diode (LED) or liquid crystal display (LCD) that flashes or rotates when an electric signal is applied.
